Nuclear technology has been widely applied in the modernized world, mainly in two ways : the manufacture of nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Yet, the debate on whether these applications are beneficial or harmful to mankind has been going on ever since its inception. To my mind, the balance tips in favour of its advantages for the following reasons.

In terms of the application of nuclear technology in the making of nuclear weapons, the dropping of the A-bomb at Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the Second World War and world peace has been maintained since then until the present time. Furthermore, the signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-ban Treaty in 1996 became a powerful check on further testing and manufacturing of nuclear weapons, again helping to guarantee a peaceful world. The problem becomes how to determine whether a country is planning to apply nuclear technology to make weapons or nuclear power for destructive purposes when it is building a nuclear reactor.

As for the peaceful use of nuclear technology, nuclear power has been extensively used as a cheap and clean energy source. Take France for example, three quarters of its electricity relies on nuclear energy. The significance of nuclear power is far-reaching, especially when world energy resources are limited, but at the same time we cannot negate the threat of radioactive leakage from reactors. A threat which may be avoided with the improvement of nuclear technology and its management.

In conclusion, nuclear technology has benefited mankind with its various applications particularly in weapons to maintain world peace and nuclear power to sustain life. We may predict therefore that its benefits will be greater as its technology advances.
